Artemis Ranch Celebrates the Arrival of a New Baby Giraffe

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 25, 2025 [Artemis Ranch, Texas Hill Country]

Saturday, February 15th marked a momentous occasion at Artemis Ranch as we welcomed the birth of our first giraffe calf, a healthy baby boy born to mother, Kenya at approximately 6pm. Both mom and baby are thriving, and we are thrilled to document and share the journey of our newest (wobbly and leggy!) little arrival.

The healthy male calf (name to TBA) is thriving, standing at approximately 5'6" and weighing around 150 pounds. This remarkable birth is a significant achievement in the ranch’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation.

“We are thrilled to welcome this new addition to the Artemis Ranch family,” said Team. “The birth of this giraffe calf underscores our mission to protect and preserve these magnificent creatures.” We work tirelessly to create an incredible life for our animals, and also to advocate - allowing our guests the opportunity to interact with these incredible animals up close, in order to reiterate the importance of conserving and protecting these species.

Our New Baby Giraffe is A Milestone for Conservation

Giraffes are listed as vulnerable, with some subspecies classified as endangered. According to the Giraffe Conservation Foundation, giraffe populations have declined by nearly 30% over the past three decades due to habitat loss, poaching, and human-wildlife conflict. The birth of this calf represents a crucial step in Artemis Ranch’s efforts to contribute to global conservation initiatives.

As part of its comprehensive breeding program, Artemis Ranch ensures genetic diversity and the long-term health of giraffe populations. By maintaining ethical breeding practices and supporting international conservation strategies, Artemis Ranch is committed to safeguarding the future of these gentle giants.

Did you know?

  • Giraffes (unsurprisingly) are the tallest land mammals: Adult giraffes can reach up to 18 feet in height - though at birth they're usually 5-6 feet tall, and mostly legs.

  • Unique patterns: Each giraffe has a distinctive spot pattern, much like human fingerprints. We identify each based on their unique color and patterns.

  • Rapid growth: Newborn giraffes grow about an inch per day during their first week. Our baby boy has grown almost 1 foot in his first 10 days!

  • Silent communicators: Giraffes use infrasonic sounds to communicate, which are inaudible to humans. They do make low gurgles and grumbles that you can hear when you feed them or are up close - it sounds like a dinosaur!

The new baby giraffe stands about 6'2" at present time.
